Terpenes

The Mommy Jane

Most of us have heard by now that, “Eating mango before you ingest, increases the effects of Cannabis” but have you ever wondered why? The answer is in the terpenes. There are 30,000 different types of terpenes found in nature, hundreds being in the cannabis sativa plant. Terpenes are an aromatic compound responsible for the smell and flavor of most plants, and play a big role in the over all sensory effect and experience with each unique Cannabis strain (cue Entourage Effect).

Terpenes are what give cannabis noteworthy scents like bubble gum and familiar flavors such as grape in strains and in fruits (ex. Cotton Candy Kush and cotton candy grapes). They also manipulate how your head and body feel with THC and CBD. So when you eat a mango before smoking cannabis, you are consuming a specific terpene: Myrcene. This fragrant oil is in both indica-heavy medicinal strains and food such as mangos. Once ingested, the Myrcene cuts through the blood brain barrier to increase your intake of cannabinoids, which in turn, does in fact get you “higher”.

Cannabinoids are almost exclusively found in Cannabis, but terpenes found in Cannabis are found in other plants as well. So go ahead and stop and smell the Geranoil, it’s in every rose and geranium plant you’ve ever savored, and almost every Cannabis strain you’ve probably tried. Terpenes are meant to attract humans to seriously therapeutic plants like rose and geranium and cannabis. With that being said, the next time you're in a dispensary and are at a crossroads between strains, close your eyes and follow your nose. The terpenes will guide you to the strain your body needs, to give you the most out of the Cannabis plant.

When you find the right terpene profile, you’ll know, because when your body has the perfect amount, you won’t feel altered at all. What you will feel is complete and whole. That’s the Entourage Effect of THC, CBD, and Terpenes in harmony, and that is homeostasis, the true benefit of Cannabis.
